Behavior Therapist

Position Summary

Behavior Therapists will be responsible for the implementation, collection of data, and monitoring effectiveness of programs developed within the client's Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP). The Behavior Therapists will conduct in-home Intensive Early Intervention Behavior Therapy Services to children with a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a set of data-driven practices grounded in behavioral science. All therapy and staff are supervised by a Licensed Mental Health Professional and Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Implement behavior modification programs
    • Attend and participate in treatment/behavior management team meetings with staff
    • Ability to effectively communicate with clients verbally and in written correspondence
    • Understand and work with the various support systems available
    • Observe and participate in providing needed services
    • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to handle emotionally charged situations
    • Following adequate training they display the ability to train others to apply effective behavior management techniques
    • Collect information about clients through detailed data collection based off program implementation and observation
    • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to client's treatment
    • Monitor, evaluate, and record client progress according to measurable goals described in ITP.
    • Prepare and maintain all required treatment records and reports
    • Attend weekly/monthly staff meetings
  • Position Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

    Staff must provide documentation that individual meets qualifications as a “mental health practitioner” as defined by the Department of Human Services:

    Mental health practitioners providing services for the treatment of mental illness, under clinical supervision of a mental health professional. To qualify as a mental health practitioner, you must be qualified in at least one of the following ways

  • If you do not have a Bachelor's Degree, you must:

    • Be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in a behavioral or child development science or allied field in an accredited college or university.
    • OR have an associate degree in a behavioral health or child development science or allied field in an accredited college or university AND at least 2,000 hours of supervised clinical experience in delivering treatment to those with ASD or a related condition
    • OR have at least 4,000 hours of supervised clinical experience in delivering treatment to people with ASD or a related condition
    • OR have a high school diploma or GED AND must complete the Level III EIDBI training as part of your training at Minnesota Behavioral Specialists
    • OR be fluent in a non-English language AND must complete the Level III EIDBI training as part of your training at Minnesota Behavioral Specialists
    • Have one year of experience as a PCA, community health worker, waiver service provider or special education assistant to a person with ASD or related condition within the previous five years AND must complete the Level III EIDBI training as part of your training at Minnesota Behavioral Specialists
  • If you have a bachelor’s degree in a behavioral or child development science or allied field, you must:  

    • Have at least 1,000 hours of supervised clinical experience or training in examining or treating people with ASD or related conditions
    • OR have 1,000 hours equivalent documented coursework at the Graduate level by an accredited university in the areas of ASD diagnostics, ASD developmental and behavioral treatment strategies and typical child development
    • OR have 1,000 hours combined between hours experience and documented coursework
    • OR be an enrolled Graduate student in a behavioral or child development science or related field
    • Reliable independent transportation, a valid driver’s license, and auto insurance
    • Ability to exhibit professionalism with clients and colleagues
    • Be a Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. (BACB)
    • Be a registered behavior technician (RBT) from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. (BACB)
    •  Have completed the equivalent in graduate-level coursework at an accredited university (Note: Coursework must be documented in one of the following areas: ASD or related condition diagnostics, ASD or related condition treatment strategies or child development.)
